How to Buff a Boat in the Water

Buffing your boat will protect it from rust and exposure to other elements for many months. It can also help your boat glide across the water easier and will produce a high-gloss finish. Buffing will help you save on fuel costs because it prevents drag in the water. For best results, remove your boat from the water before buffing. It is possible to buff above the water level while the boat is still in the water.

Instructions

    • 1

Rinse your entire boat with a hose to remove any loose dirt. Scrub the outside surface with a long handled brush. Scrub just below the water line to remove any built up scum. This may take a good deal of elbow grease.

    • 2

Scrub with a natural cleaner for hard to remove dirt and stains. The cleaner should be made only of natural ingredients to prevent water contamination. Make a paste of 1/4 cup of baking soda and a 1/2 cup of water and apply it to your scrub brush to scrub the stain. Scrub in a circular motion. You can also combine a 1/2 cup of vinegar and a 1/4 cup of baking soda.

    • 3

Wipe the fiberglass above the water surface with clean, dry towels.

    • 4

Apply a layer of wax to the boat using a wax pad. The pads usually come with the wax or purchased at any auto supply store. Rub in a circular motion and apply in 2-to-3 foot sections at a time.

    • 5

Wait for the wax to dry. The wax will appear dull and milky when it is ready for buffing.

    • 6

Buff the wax off of the boat by holding pressing the buffer gently onto the boat's surface. Keep the buffer moving to prevent damage to the paint. Hold the buffer flat on the boat and do not buff with the edges. Remove wax that the buffer will not reach by rubbing with a clean, dry towel. Continue applying wax over all surfaces above the water until finished.
