Checklist for Photography

Successful photography, particularly formal or professional photography, requires thorough preparation before a shoot and a systematic organized approach during a shoot. Being a photographer can be stressful and it pays to make sure everything is in order -- all equipment is ready and everything that needs to be photographed has been well-thought out beforehand -- or things can go very wrong. Often with photography re-doing things is very time consuming and expensive.
  1. Equipment

    • It is important to have a checklist for the equipment required to satisfactorily complete a shoot. The day before a shoot make sure you have everything you need such as charged batteries, spare batteries, correct lenses and the right cables. It is a good idea to carry all your supplies in a professional photographer's bag. Make sure you have the right tripods if necessary and check your memory card -- it may be a good idea to have an extra one as backup. Lights, light stands, cleaning cloths, flashes and filters are other items to consider.

    Logistics

    • Think about the organizational aspects of the shoot. If you have a venue booked or a location chosen, ensure that you and the subjects know how to find it, and ask in advance whether there will be adequate parking space. For outdoor shoots, a weather check is imperative. Also, inquire whether there is a safe place to leave your equipment if security is an issue. Any possible issues or complications that could arise on the day should be thoroughly thought through.

    Shots

    • Once on location, have a pre-planned checklist concerning the shots you are going to take. Know approximately how many shots are needed for each session and understand the exact needs of the client. For example if shooting real estate, know exactly how many photos are needed, from what angles and which rooms or views are absolutely necessary to be shot. For weddings, know who to shoot and when, which special moments are coming up and whether the bride and groom have any special requests for particular photos.

    Post

    • After the shoot, check that you have everything you need. A summary review of the shots is a good idea -- you may find that something has been overlooked and can quickly be done before departing the scene. Check that all equipment has been packed up with no items missing. Secure the venue and do a final check of your understanding of client expectations as to the final delivery timetable.
