How to Make a Stabilizer Light for a Bow

In order to find game when bow hunting in after dark, it helps to have a light source to see your target more clearly. To help in this regard, you can install a flashlight on the stabilizer mount. This is commonly called a bow light, stabilizer light or a bow-mounted flashlight. This type of light is used legally in some locales for night hunting of game like wild pigs and crocodiles. The process of mounting a flashlight on a bow is not very difficult and it is significantly less expensive than buying a commercial, ready-made product.

Things You'll Need

  • 1 bolt, size depends on the size, length and thread count of the hole of the stabilizer mount
  • 1 nut
  • Nut driver
  • Wrench or pliers
  • Rubber washer (optional)
  • Brass metal washer (optional)
  • 2-C battery flashlight with aluminum housing
  • Hand-held drill and bit
  • Bench vise
  • Door bell switch (optional)
  • Soldering iron (optional)
  • Solder (optional)
  • Safety glasses
  • 2 small pieces of cardboard

      Typical type of aluminum-body flashlight that can be use for this project.

      Unscrew the base of the flashlight. Remove the spring from the base. Place the base in the bench vise, with pieces of cardboard on each side to prevent damage, and then tighten it down. Be sure that you don't warp it by tightening the vise too much.

      Put on your safety glasses. Attach the proper size bit on the drill and then drill the hole in the center of the flashlight base. Remove the base from the vise and blow out any pieces of metal around the hole.

      Insert the bolt into the inside part of the base so the threads are exposed towards the base. Apply a sealant compound to the nut (super glue works) and tighten it firmly to the outside base. Replace the spring and reassemble the flashlight. You can then mount the flashlight into the stabilizer screw hole.
