How to Tie a Jerk Knot

The jerk knot is also known as the quick release knot and is commonly used in tying horses up. This knot can come undone quickly with one jerk of the rope and is convenient to use because you can use the rope for a different purpose after. You should practice tying a jerk knot several times before attempting to keep a horse in one place. If you do not tie the knot properly, the horse could escape or the jerk knot could become difficult to release.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the rope around a pole or object that you need to tie a knot around. Hold out the rope and adjust it so that both ends of the rope are at even lengths opposite the pole.

    • 2

Move the left side of the rope so that it crosses under the right side of the rope.

    • 3

Twist the left side of the rope into a loop while continuing to hold the rope under the right rope.

    • 4

Take the rope end that is under the right rope and guide it over the right side of the rope. Guide the rope through the knot that you created on the left side of the pole.

    • 5

Tighten the knot by pulling the rope through the loop. Do not let the end of the rope go all the way through. There should be a new loop surrounded by the original left loop.

    • 6

Release the knot by pulling on the end of the rope that you created the second loop with. The knot will quickly come free.
