How To Feed a Betta Fry

Betta fry are the offspring of betta fish and live on their yolk sac for about three days. They spend the first two days of life close to the nest. When betta fry fall out of the nest to the bottom of the tank, the adult male betta swims down and collects them into his mouth. The adult male betta returns to the nest and spits them back into it. Around the fourth day of life, betta fry start to swim and are ready to be introduced to food.

Instructions

    • 1

Watch to see when the betta fry have absorbed the egg sac. Once they begin to swim horizontally, usually around the fourth day, use a fish net to remove the adult male betta from the 5-gallon tank and place him into a separate tank.

    • 2

Add an air stone to the tank after the adult male betta has been removed to aerate and keep the water moving.

    • 3

Mix microworms in a cup with water. Use a baby medicine eye dropper to give the fry about 3 or 4 drops of the microworms. Feed the betta fry daily each morning and evening.

    • 4

Inspect the bottom of the tank before the morning feeding for microworms. If the betta fry fail to eat all microworms, you will need to siphon the dead worms from the bottom of the tank using a siphon hose.

    • 5

Feed the betta fry in the evening using the same amount of microworms as fed in the morning. You should be able to see the microworms inside the small betta fry due to their transparency at this young age.

    • 6

Repeat this procedure until the fry reach 3-4 weeks of age. Introduce frozen bloodworms and frozen Daphnia by grating them with a very fine cheese grater and feeding them to the fry twice daily.
