How to Make a Mold of a Lamp

Making a duplicate of an object such as a lamp is done by using a mold. A mold imprints a shape of the object that you can later cast in plaster or another material. Making a mold requires a product that is used by movie prop makers, called silicone rubber. To do this you will need to obtain all of the materials with which you are required to complete the project.

Things You'll Need

  • Cardboard container
  • Silicone spray
  • Silicone rubber

Instructions

    • 1

Place the base of the lamp that you want to mold in the cardboard container. Verify that the container is 3 to 4 inches higher than the lamp. Take out the lamp and set it on the floor.

    • 2

Spray the entire surface of the lamp with the silicone spray. This will allow you to remove the finished mold from the lamp. Set the lamp back in the cardboard container.

    • 3

Mix the silicone rubber by following the directions on the package. Mix enough of the silicone rubber to completely cover the lamp.

    • 4

Pour the silicone rubber into the cardboard container. Fill the container until there is at least 2 inches of it over the top of the lamp.

    • 5

Allow the silicone rubber to dry for at least 12 hours. Gently pull the cardboard off of the rubber mold.

    • 6

Cut down one side of the mold with the knife and gently pull on the rubber. Remove the lamp from the rubber mold.
