How to Breed Trout

Trout can be found in cool lakes, rivers and streams throughout the U.S. Some people travel to remote locations to catch trout for the enjoyment of the catch and for the trout's delicious flavor. Others simply purchase trout from stores or restaurants. These purchased fish are typically raised on fish farms. Fish farms breed trout in large quantities for profit. You can breed and raise your own trout by understanding the basic principles of farming trout.

Instructions

Purchase a tank from a fish farming supply company. You will also need to purchase a filter for the tank. You can use a small swimming pool to save money; however, you will only be able to breed a small number of trout in a swimming pool. Make sure your tank or pool and pump can accommodate a water flow of at least 350 gallons per minute.

Set up your fish tank in a cool shaded area, as trout require water temperatures in the range of 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Fill the tank with water using a clean water source. Turn the pump on to ensure it is functioning properly. Allow the water to age 24 hours before introducing fish.

Purchase your adult male and female trout from a trusted fish seller. Gently place each trout in the tank. Do not throw the fish, as this may cause physical trauma and delay the spawning process. Place an appropriate amount of trout pellets, or trout food, in the tank. Check the temperature of the water daily. Your fish will begin spawning, otherwise known as breeding, in due time. Check the pool often for fish eggs to ensure the fish have spawned.
