How to Make a Shotgun Butt Plate

The butt plate on a shotgun is typically a small piece of metal that is secured to the end of the stock. If you do not want to use a metal butt plate, you can make a softer one from rubber. This is called a recoil pad and helps to absorb shock from the recoil when firing the shotgun.

Things You'll Need

  • Rubber pad
  • Felt tip marker
  • Model knife
  • Tape measure
  • Drill
  • 1/4-inch washers
  • Screws

Instructions

    • 1

Place the rubber pad on a flat surface such as a table or workbench. Trace the shape of the butt stock on the rubber pad with the felt tip marker.

    • 2

Cut around the outline of the butt stock on the rubber with the model knife. Place the piece of rubber on the end of the stock to check the fit. Trim the rubber if the fit is not quite correct.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the top of the stock to the screw hole for the butt plate. Measure the distance from the bottom of the stock to the screw hole.

    • 4

Transfer the measurements to the cut piece of rubber and make a mark using the felt-tip marker. Drill a 1/8-inch hole through each mark with the power drill.

    • 5

Expand the top of the 1/8-inch hole by drilling a 1/4-inch countersink hole. This will allow the screw to hold the pad to the end of the stock.

    • 6

Place a 1/4-inch washer into each hole in the cut piece of rubber. Place the rubber against the end of the stock. Secure the rubber with screws using the power drill.
