How to Tie a Bullwhip

Bullwhips cannot really whip, without having a "popper" at the end. A popper is the fuzzy object that is tied to the tip of the bullwhip. The cracking sound that the bullwhips makes when used properly, is the sound of the popper breaking the sound barrier. These can be made with heavy nylon upholstery thread or just nylon string. But, bullwhip poppers can wear down over time -- and tying a replacement popper may become a regular occurrence.

Instructions

  1. Making the Popper

    • 1

Hold one end of the string with one hand. Twist the string with your other hand until it becomes tight. When it starts to kink, it is tight enough.

    • 2

Fold the piece of string in half. It will twist up itself and form a small loop at one end.

    • 3

Tie an overhand knot about three inches down from the loop.

    • 4

Use scissors to cut about a half inch or so past the loop to make the fringe.

Tying the Popper to the Bullwhip

    • 5

Lay the popper across the tip of the bullwhip -- also known as the bull whip fall -- where it is to be tied.

    • 6

Wrap the popper one time around the bullwhip fall.

    • 7

Insert the bullwhip fall into the loop at the end of the popper.

    • 8

Pull the end of the popper that is not looped. Pulling this end will tighten the popper onto the bullwhip fall.
