DIY Cooler Fittings

Adding a fitting to a cooler allows you to easily drain excess water that results from melting ice. When using a fitting you do not need to lift the entire cooler up to drain out the water. The installation of a fitting will require a drain hole. This needs to be on one side of your cooler and not on the bottom panel. To do this you will need to install a simple plastic water tap.

Things You'll Need

  • Water tap
  • Tape measure
  • Hole saw attachment
  • Power drill
  • Silicone sealant

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the threads of the water tap with the tape measure.

    • 2

Attach the hole saw attachment that is the size of the measurement in Step 1 into the chuck of the power drill.

    • 3

Make a mark on one side of the cooler 1 to 2 inches up from the bottom panel with the felt tip marker.

    • 4

Place the center of the hole saw attachment on the mark you made on the cooler. Set the rotation of the drill to the "Forward" position. Press the trigger and drill a hole through the side of the cooler.

    • 5

Apply silicone sealant to the threads of the water tap. Insert the threads of the water tap into the hole in the cooler. Turn the water tap to the right until it is tight and the opening is facing down.

    • 6

Allow the sealant to dry for at least 12 hours before using the cooler.
