Techniques, Tips, Pros & Cons of Colored Pencils

Colored pencils are an underrated yet very satisfying artistic medium for many people. They have many qualities that endear them to their user and can produce highly satisfying artistic results. Colored pencils are very versatile and have the precision of hard-tipped lead pencils along with the light touch of soft-tipped pencils. Colored pencils are almost crayon-like in their texture, filled with a wax-like core that contains pigments and other fillers.
  1. Techniques

    • There are a myriad of different techniques that can be used with colored pencils. Changing the pressure produces lighter or darker shades as desired. Stippling is the creation of visuals using dots. The user can combine dots of different colors for different results. Cross-hatching technique involves filling in an area with crisscrossing lines. Layering involves using different colors layered on top of each other to create different hues. Sliding the pencil onto a more acute angle produces wider and softer lines.

    Tips

    • Colored pencils should be kept sharp at all times for detailed clear lines. Try not to use too much pressure on the paper as colored pencil tips will flake. Try to keep pencil strokes even and consistent in pressure and movement. Use more than one color. Create new colors and hues by layering and by over-layering colors like blacks and whites. Take note of your colors you are using in case you leave your artwork for a period of time. Use a light-colored pencil to draw out the sketch beforehand and always remember to keep your paper clean, brushing away debris as you draw.

    Advantages

    • Colored pencils have many advantages. One of the most attractive ones is that they are a very inexpensive medium to work with, both with the pencils and the surfaces. They are also very portable and can be taken almost anywhere and easily used both indoors and outdoors. They are also versatile in that they can be used for detailed sketches and drawings, or shaded and nuanced pieces of work. They can be used in many different surfaces and can be mixed with several other mediums.

    Disadvantages

    • Colored pencils can be a frustrating medium to work in as they are prone to constant breakages and flaking. They require more time to produce a piece and lack the spontaneity of working with oils. The artist can get aches and pains in the wrist and joints after working for long hours with pencils. The drawings can suffer from reflection or a white haze known as 'wax bloom.'
