DIY Chum Box

A chum box, or chum bucket, is a durable container used for attracting large fish, such as sharks. Chum, or ground-up dead fish, is placed inside the box or bucket, which is placed into the water and attached to the boat by a cord or rope. Holes in the box or bucket release the chum into the water, which attracts meat-eating fish. These fish can then be caught more easily by the people in the boat.

Things You'll Need

  • Plastic recompression crate (available at most home supply stores)
  • Metal carabiner
  • Several feet of sturdy rope
  • Scissors
  • String
  • Several large pieces of dead fish

Instructions

    • 1

Tie one end of the rope firmly around the closed carabiner and knot in place.

    • 2

Turn the recompression crate upside so the bottom is facing upwards.

    • 3

Open the carabiner and hook it to the center of the bottom side of the recompression crate.

    • 4

      Lock the carabiner in place.

    • 5

Turn the crate back over and place several pounds of chunk chum (large pieces of dead fish) inside. The chum pieces should be larger than the holes in the recompression crate. Tie these pieces of fish firmly to the sides of the recompression crate using string.

    • 6

Once you are in your desired fishing location, sink the recompression crate into the water by pushing downward and letting water fill the crate. Allow the crate to sink to the bottom of the lake or ocean (close enough to shore for the rope to reach the bottom). The dead fish will attract local meat-eating fish such as sharks.
