Instructions for a Glow Plug Igniter

Glow plug igniters work by electronically heating a metal coil spring -- the actual glow plug -- within the combustion chamber of an engine, until it has a red-hot glow. Once the glow plug is red hot, it facilitates combustion of the initial fuel entering the cylinder by heating the fumes of the fuel. Specifically, the igniter is an exterior power source and handheld gun that connects to the glow plugs exterior coupler. Electrical current is transferred from the power source, through the hand-held coupler and into the glow plug.

Instructions

    • 1

Plug the external power source into a 120-volt socket to charge. This should be done 24 hours before the unit is needed, or continuously through out the day if multiple glow plugs need to be heated.

    • 2

Plug the handheld coupler into the exterior coupler of the glow plug. The handheld coupler is attached to the power source via a power cord, transferring current to the glow plug automatically, when the two metal pieces are joined.

    • 3

Allow 30 seconds to one minute for the glow plug to heat. Remove the handheld coupler and quickly start the engine while the glow plug is fully heated. Once the engine is warm, the glow plug igniter is not required for restarts, since the engine temperature will facilitate combustion on its own.
