Tricks You Can Do With a Yo-Yo Mosquito

The Yo-Yo Mosquito is a flared gap yo-yo produced by Duncan. A flared gap yo-yo has edges that are angled out. This design allows players more room to guide the string onto the axle, or middle, of the yo-yo. These maneuvers are called string tricks. You can also do looping tricks, sleeping tricks and counterweight tricks with the Yo-Yo Mosquito.
  1. String Tricks

    • A player performs string tricks by landing the yo-yo on the string while the yo-yo is still spinning. The basic trick using this method is called the Trapeze. To achieve this trick, the player releases the yo-yo so that it loops around the index finger. The player's index finger guides the yo-yo to land on the string horizontally. The player then jerks his or her hands away from each other; this causes the yo-yo to snap into the player's hands.

    Looping Tricks

    • A player does looping tricks when he or she sends the yo-yo around in a circle. The yo-yo still spins at the end of the string while looping. Around the World uses this method; the yo-yo goes over the shoulder, around the arm and comes up under the elbow. Players can even jump over the looping yo-yo, as in Texas Cowboy.

    Sleeping Tricks

    • Sleeping tricks focus on the yo-yo spinning on the end of the string. A trick known as Walk the Dog involves the player keeping the yo-yo in a sleeping position while it rolls along the ground. Another trick is called Rock the Baby. The handler lets the yo-yo stay spinning at the end of the string and pulls the string up to form a triangle. He then swings the spinning yo-yo through the triangle.

    Counterweight Tricks

    • Counterweight tricks involve attaching an item to the empty side of the string. The counterweight adds mass and counterbalance to the yo-yo. This allows the player to throw the yo-yo string around, as well as the yo-yo. Such a trick is known as the 360. Here the player attaches a die to the empty side of the string. The player then throws the yo-yo and die around her hand.
