How to Adjust an M1A Trigger

The M1A rifle is a civilian version of the popular M14 military rifle. The rifle was introduced by Springfield Armory in 1974 and is still an enthusiast favorite due to its high quality and relatively low cost. The main differences between the M1A and its military cousin are related to the process used to build the rifle. A much more expensive "drop forging" technique was used to create the M14 while the M1A was made from a less costly steel-alloy cast. In the event the M1A trigger needs adjustment, the process can be completed without sending the rifle off to a specialist.

Place the gun on "safe" and point it in a safe direction. Remove the gun's magazine and then ensure that the chamber is empty by pulling the operating rod fully to the rear and locking it before visually inspecting the chamber.

    • 2

Place the rifle upside down and grab the forend stock with the left hand. Use the thumb and forefinger of the right hand to grasp the trigger guard and then pull it upward until it is fully extended. Now that it is accessible, lift the trigger housing from the rifle.

    • 3

Turn the trigger-pull adjustment screw located on the inside rear section of the trigger housing with an allen wrench. Turning the screw clockwise increases the trigger-pull weight while the weight is decreased by turning the screw counter-clockwise. Reinstall the housing once the adjustment is complete.
