How to Flatten a Welded Surface

Metal that has been welded typically leaves a bead or excess material on the surface. This material can easily be flattened to eliminate any imperfections in your work. To do this, you will need a handheld grinder. This is a tool that spins a metal grinding wheel at 1,500 to 2,000 rotations per minute. You can find a grinding wheel for purchase at your local home improvement store.

Instructions

    • 1

Secure the piece of metal that you have welded to a bench with clamps. Verify that the safety for the handheld grinder is set to the "On" position, if applicable.

    • 2

Plug the power cord for the handheld grinder into an electrical outlet or an extension cord. If using an extension cord, verify that it is plugged into an electrical outlet.

    • 3

Position the tip of the grinder wheel on the edge of the weld at a 15 degree angle. Press the trigger and run the grinder over the weld. Repeat this step to remove small amounts of the weld as you do not want to damage the metal.
