How to Hook Up a Descender

A descender is a piece of equipment made of metal that is designed to be used as a component with a descent system. A descent system is used for rappelling or for fire and rescue. To use the descender it needs to be connected to a working line. This is done by learning how the rope is attached to the descender. You need to practice this technique until you can connect a descender to the working line without the aid of instructions.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the end of the working line where it attaches to the anchorage to your left. This is known as the "anchor" end of the line. The opposite end of the line is known as the "tag end" and should be placed to your right.

    • 2

Make a loop in the "tag end" of the rope and insert it into the top eye of the descender. Pull the loop of the rope until you can pass it over the bottom of the descender.

    • 3

Insert the loop of the rope through the backside of the center eye. Place the bottom of the loop over the bottom eye. Pull the "tag end" of the line to remove any slack in the rope.
