How to Make a Photo Brighter

Lighting is an essential part of photography. Novice photographers who take photos indoors, perhaps at a restaurant that has little lighting, may not know to adjust their camera settings to accommodate for the low light; therefore, their photos will come out too dark. Luckily, there are programs that allow photographers to brighten their photos. Those who do not have professional software need not worry. Programs that come installed in PC laptops, such as Windows Live Photo Gallery, allow you to brighten dark photos, too.

Things You'll Need

  • Photo-editing software, such as Windows Live Photo Gallery

Instructions

    • 1

Go to your Start Menu, click "Pictures," go the appropriate folder and click the photo you wish to edit to view the image in the Windows Photo Viewer.

    • 2

Click "Open" and scroll down to Windows Live Photo Gallery to open the photo in the editing program.

    • 3

Click "Fix" to open the editing menu.

    • 4

Click "Auto Adjust" to automatically brighten the photo. Sometimes this results in an image that remains too dark. In cases where you are not satisfied with Auto Adjust's edit, click "Adjust Exposure" and play with "Brightness," "Contrast," "Shadows" and "Highlights" until you are satisfied with the results.
