DIY SCA Combat Mace

"Mass weapon of giants, destroyer of hips, shoulders, heads and various other body parts. In the hands of a skilled fighter, it can spell certain doom for their opponent." So writes Lord Krey Macleod, a member of the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism), about the combat mace, a medieval, club-like weapon designed to bludgeon opponents. In accordance with the society's guidelines, you can construct your own SCA-approved combat mace.

Instructions

    • 1

Lathe or sand the length of rattan into a circular shaft. The base handle of the shaft may be narrowed beyond the 1 1/4 inch diameter minimum if desired.

    • 2

Drill a centralized hole in the base of the mace head for shaft insertion. The hole diameter should be equal to the shaft diameter. The hole depth should be equal to 1/2 to 2/3 the depth of the mace head. Do not drill all the way through the mace head.

    • 3

Inject hot melt glue into the hole in the mace head.

    • 4

Insert the non-handle end of the shaft into the hole in the mace head. Immediately remove excess glue at the base of the mace head.

    • 5

Secure the mace head to the shaft with cross-wrapped duct tape for further stability if desired.

    • 6

Attach additional pieces of foam or rubber to the mace shaft with hot melt glue or duct tape if desired. Paint or stain the mace if desired.
