How to Mix Wood Glazes

If you don't want a dark stain, wood glazes are a great option. A wood glaze can give your wood a shiny finish and a light coat of stain, providing a smooth finish for wood furniture. Wood glaze can be made in many different colors. The easiest way to make wood glaze is to mix the glaze of your choice with the stain of your choice.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure out 1 part stain to 3 parts glaze, using a separate container for each. Keep them separate in the plastic containers until you are ready to mix them.

    • 2

Pour contents of containers into a bucket. Put the lid on top of the bucket to make sure it fits before you proceed to mix. If the container is not airtight, the glaze will dry in the bucket and be unusable.

    • 3

Mix the glaze and stain using the paint mixer. Keep the mixer low in the bucket to keep the mixture from splashing out. Mix the liquid until it appears to be one solid color with no streaking in it. The mixture will be somewhat translucent because it is mostly glaze.

    • 4

Test your mixture on a small piece of the wood. Paint a 1-inch-by-1-inch-square piece of wood and let it dry overnight to see what your glaze will look like on your furniture. If it is too light, add additional glaze to your mixture.
