Things You'll Need
Instructions
Purchase a quality fly rod as well as a good reel to catch speckled trout within the Texas Gulf Coast. Select a flexible and lightweight fly rod that is able to bend at a 45-degree angle. In addition, use line that is weighted and 8- to 10-pound strength.
Drive your boat a mile to six miles from shore, according to the website Gulf Fishing. Search for areas that have swirling eddies, deep drop-off points, strong currents and deep-water reefs.
If fishing from shore, consider using waders as a means to travel farther out within the water to fish. With the use of waders, anglers can cast farther and move to various locations that are ideal for speckled trout. Additionally, focus your fishing lines near grassy inlets, sandy bottoms and submerged rocks or debris.
Select a brightly colored fly that has long deer hair of various colors such as red, dark blue, purple, white and dark green. Tie the fly to your fishing line with a snell knot to ensure that the fly is secure.
Cast your fly, and allow the ocean current to take it. Let your fly sink for one to two minutes, before attempting to retrieve the line. Slowly, pull the line toward your location while holding the fishing pole and line perpendicular to the water. Get ready to raise your rod and do battle when you receive a strike.
Watch the line. When a speckled trout strikes the bait, it will immediately struggle to swallow the bait. The line goes straight and your rod will bob up and down. Immediately yank the line on receiving a hard strike; this will jam the hook into the fleshy jaw area of the speckled trout.
Play the speckled trout by letting the fish flee with the line. Allow the fish plenty of line while utilize your drag.
Tire the fish out though using the drag and employing a smart strategy of reeling in the line and letting the fish run as it struggles to get free of the hook. The speckled trout will soon exhaust itself out to where the fish is unable to pull away from your constant reeling. Once you notice the speckled trout's not fighting as hard as before, start towing the fish to your boat or shore.
Move the speckled trout's head toward a dip net, which is used is to land the fish. The dip net extends around 2 feet in width. Position the dip net underneath the fish, and scoop the fish within the net. Quickly move the speckled trout inside the boat or shore to remove the hook.
Make a decision whether to keep the fish or partake in "catch and release."
