How to Mold a Rubber Sole

Molds are made from shoe soles for comparison purposes when a forensic study is being performed as part of a police investigation. Copies of a shoe sole can also be produced from a mold. To make a mold you need to learn each step of the process. Making a mold requires the use of a pliable agent. The type of agent to use when making a mold is silicone rubber.

  • Utility knife
  • Shoe box
  • Molding clay
  • Silicone spray

Instructions

      Cut the sole from the shoe you want to mold by using the utility knife.

      Place a 1-inch think base of molding clay onto the bottom of the shoe box. Smooth out the clay so that it is flat.

      Place the shoe sole face-up into the shoe box and press it gently into the clay. Apply a small amount of silicone spray to the surface of the shoe sole and the clay.

      Mix the silicone rubber by following the instructions on the package. Pour the silicone rubber into the shoe box. Cover the shoe sole with at least 1/2 an inch of the silicone rubber.

      Allow the silicone rubber to cure or set up between 16 and 18 hours. Separate the cardboard from the mold and then remove the molding clay.
