How to Make a Paper Mache Submarine Move

Paper Mache, or papier-mâché, is one of the world's most popular craft materials as it is very cheap to make, pliable and fairly strong when dry. It's also environmentally friendly, according to craftsperson and author Gilat Nadivi. You can make a paper mache submarine move on land, so to speak, with a small motor. However, this bears no resemblance to reality, as a submarine is a submersible watercraft. The ideal way to make a paper mache submarine move is in water.

Instructions

    • 1

Incorporate a heavy weight in the nose of your submarine, such as a coin or metal washer, so it will "dive" like a real submarine. Add a string in your design if you want to recover your submarine without getting your hands wet.

    • 2

Paint the submarine with liquid rubber waterproof paint or a similar product following the specific manufacturer's instructions carefully. Ensure you cover every part. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

    • 3

Fill a tank, such as an aquarium, with water.

    • 4

Place the submarine in the tank and it should move in a way representative of the familiar submarine dive maneuver.

    • 5

Recover the submarine and repeat the movement as required.
