How to Make an Origami Hanging Crane

The paper crane is a classic piece of origami that can be easily modified to hang. A paper crane must be made with a square piece of paper or precut origami paper. Paper cranes require concentration to be properly folded, but they are one of the more simple origami creations and can be mastered relatively quickly.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold the paper horizontally and vertically in half, bending backwards so the fold sticks up (mountain folds). Unfold the paper. Fold diagonally from any corner so the fold indents into the paper when unfolded (valley fold). Unfold. Diagonally fold the paper from the other corner. Unfold.

    • 2

Rotate the paper 45 degrees into a diamond shape. Pinch the left and right corners behind the paper. Slowly collapse the top and bottom to make the square base. Rotate the square so the point where all the folds connect makes the top point of the diamond.

    • 3

Fold the left and right corners of the top square into the center, creating a kite shape. Fold the remaining triangle on top inward. Unfold.

    • 4

Hold your thumb on the corners of the second layer and pull the bottom corner gently upward. Collapse the back of this pocket along the top triangle crease mark created in step 3. Fold the sides so the edges touch each other in the center and crease. This is known as the petal fold.

    • 5

Flip the paper over, and repeat steps 3 and 4 to duplicate the petal fold on the last layer of the square base.

    • 6

Bring the left and right corners of the top layer into the center to make another kite shape. Flip the paper over and repeat the fold.

    • 7

Pull the left bottom flap to the side and reverse the center crease (inside-out fold). Do the same to the right flap to create the basis of the head and tail.

    • 8

Bend the top section of either side down. Inside-out fold the crease to create the head. Bend the first layer top triangle down toward the front and the back layer to the back to create the wings.

    • 9

Tug at the wings to pop out the center. Thread the needle through the bottom of the crane and out through this center square. Create a sizable knot on the end. Tug the knot into the center of the crane where it is hidden.
