How to Reload 270-Cal Ammunition

Introduced in 1925, the .270 WCF, more commonly known as the .270 Winchester, is one of the most popular hunting cartridges in America. Flat-shooting and with great accuracy, the .270 fires a .277-inch-diameter, 130-grain bullet up to 3,100 feet per second. The cartridge is appropriate for taking game from varmints to deer, elk and moose. Hodgdon Powders H4831 is an excellent powder choice with the 130-grain bullet, offering high velocity and accuracy. Alliant Reloder 22 and IMR-4350 are also good powder choices. For larger, tougher game such as elk or moose, choose a premium-construction bullet, such as the Nosler Partition, Swift Scirocco II or Barnes TSX.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the sizing die in the press and set the depth according to the manufacturer's instructions. Lube the cartridge case, then install it in the press's shell holder. Raise the ram to size the case and push out the spent primer. Lower the ram to expand the case neck to the correct size. Remove the sizing die.

    • 2

Open a new pack of Large Rifle primers and place them faceup in primer tray. Place the case in the priming tool and squeeze the lever to seat a new primer in the case's primer pocket.

    • 3

Consult your reloading manual and choose a load. For example, for the 130-grain Barnes TSX bullet, Hodgdon recommends a starting load of 54.0 grains of H4831 powder. The maximum load is 60.0 grains. Set the powder measure to dispense 54.0 grains. Verify the charge on the scale. Dispense the powder into the cartridge case.

    • 4

Install the seating die in the press and set the depth according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Place a bullet on top of the case mouth and raise the ram to seat the bullet.

    • 5

Remove the cartridge and use the vernier calipers to measure the case overall length. If the bullet needs to be seated deeper, screw the seating die's bullet seater plug deeper (down) and reseat the bullet.
