How to Skirt & Wing Trolling Lures

Trolling lures are those that are meant to drag through the water while the boat is moving, hence the name trolling. These lures are bigger than some other types for fishing and they are often assembled from several different parts and pieces. When adding the skirts and the wings to the lure, the easily movable pieces that flop around, you're going to need some cord and some soap to get them properly assembled.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Figure out where the skirts will fit on the head lure by matching the diameter of the head lure to a place on the skirt where they're roughly even. Cut the skirts at that place so that you can slide the skirt onto the head lure.

Slip the lower skirt onto the head lure until it's set firmly in the skirt ring. Tie the skirt tightly in place with waxed cord.

    • 3

Flip the outer skirt inside out and lubricate the new inside with dish soap. Slide the outer skirt over the head lure from the opposite end until it's also over the outer skirt ring. Tie the outer skirt in place tightly with a waxed cord. Once tied tight, flip the outer skirt down so that the ends of both skirts are now pointed in the same direction. Rinse the skirts thoroughly to get rid of any remaining soap.

Pre-tie a knot in the wings that you can slip closed, leaving a wide loop. A slip knot or a construction knot are recommended. Loop the wings over the head lure and slide the loop down until it's in the center place between the two skirts. Pull the wings tight slowly, keeping them even in length. When pulled fully tight, the wings should be snug firmly between the two skirt rings.
