How to Crochet a Camera Cover

Cameras today are both artistic tool and fashion accessory. Photographers and photo enthusiasts can easily crochet covers to protect cameras. There are two covers outlined here: a simple bag for a pocket camera and a more complex cover for a digital single lens reflex camera that includes a tube structure on the front to accommodate the longer lens. The measurement of stitches and rows will vary depending upon the size of the camera body and lens. Many types of yarn or string are suitable for this project, although very fluffy or soft yarns are probably not practical. Nylon cord makes a sturdy and protective cover.

Things You'll Need

  • Medium weight yarn such as sport yarn or medium weight nylon cord
  • Crochet Hook H (5.00 mm) or size that yields a tight gauge
  • Round shoelace cord, 18 inches
  • Draw string cord lock
  • Masking tape
  • Pliers
  • Tweezers

Instructions

  1. Pocket Camera

    • 1

With the main color, make a chain the width of the desired case, approximately 15 chains. The pattern is worked in an elongated circle or round.

    • 2

For round one, chain two stitches, then half double crochet in the third chain from the hook and in each chain across.

    • 3

Turn the work upside down and work in the opposite loops of the chain stitches. Work half double crochet stitches into each chain across the row. At the end of the row, the last stitch should be opposite the first half double crochet stitch made. Continue crocheting in a spiral fashion.

    • 4

For round two to round 14, half double crochet in each half double crochet around. Repeat for 13 rounds or until the case is as long as desired.

    • 5

To create the flap, change to a contrasting color, chain two, turn your work, half double crochet in the next 15 half double crochets or the number of half double crochets in round one of the pattern. For flap rows two to five: chain two, turn, half double crochet in each half double crochet across. Continue for five rows. For flap row six: chain four, turn, treble crochet in each half double crochet across. For flap row seven, chain one, turn and slip stitch in each treble crochet. Finish off.

Create a button with either color by chaining two and working six single crochet stitches in the second chain. Slip stitch in first single crochet. Yarn over and pull up a loop in each single crochet, keeping each loop on the hook. Yarn over and pull yarn through all the loops. Pull tight. Cut the yarn and tie both loose ends together in a square knot. Attach the button to the case.

With the shoelace cord make a loop as long as the circumference of the camera lens, approximately 10-to-11 inches. Add 6 inches and cut the cord. Wrap a small strip of masking tape around each end. Fold the cord in the middle. Pinch the drawstring cord lock with the pliers to open the hole in the middle. Push the folded loop through the hole in the slide with the tweezers. Release the slide. Slip the loop around the lens and tighten it slightly with the slide. This will be the foundation of the lens tube on the front of the camera cover.

    • 7

For tube round one, work double crochet stitches around the cord loop, approximately 3 stitches per inch. Join the last double crochet to the first double crochet with a slip stitch. Check to see if the tube fits the lens. Enlarge or reduce the loop with the cord lock and add or subtract stitches if necessary.

    • 8

For tube round two and subsequent rounds, chain two and single crochet in each double crochet around the loop. Join with a slip stitch. Continue with single crochet rounds until the tube is the length of the lens on the camera. For example, an 18mm to 270mm telephoto lens would require 4 ½ inches of tube and if five rows of single crochet is 1 inch, then the tube will require 23 rows of single crochet. For the last tube round, chain three, double crochet in each single crochet around the tube. Join round with a slip stitch.

    • 9

For body round one, chain three and work two double crochets in each double crochet around the tube. Join the round with a slip stitch. For body rounds two and three, chain three and work one double crochet in each double crochet around the tube. Join the round with a slip stitch.

    • 10

For body round four, chain two and work one single crochet in the next ten double crochets. This is the end of the bottom single crochet section. Then work one double crochet in every two double crochets until the round is opposite the end of the bottom single crochet section. Work one single crochet in the next 25 double crochets. This is the top single crochet section. Work one double crochet in every two double crochets until the round is opposite the bottom single crochet section. Work one single crochet in the next ten double crochet.s This is the beginning of the bottom single crochet section. Join round with a slip stitch.

    • 11

For body round five, chain two and work one single crochet in the next ten double crochets. Then work one double crochet in every double crochet until you reach the single crochet section. Work one single crochet in each single crochet. Then work one double crochet in every double crochet until the next single crochet section. Work one single crochet in each single crochet. Join round with a slip stitch.

    • 12

For body round six, chain two and work one single crochet in every two single crochets. Then work one double crochet in every two double crochet until you reach the single crochet section. Work one single crochet in every two single crochets. Then work one double crochet in every two double crochets until the next single crochet section. Work one single crochet in every two single crochets. Join round with a slip stitch.

    • 13

For body round seven to 13, chain two and work one single crochet in each single crochet. Then work one double crochet in each double crochet until you reach the single crochet section. Work one single crochet in each single crochet. Then work one double crochet in each double crochet until the next single crochet section. Work one single crochet in each single crochet. Join round with a slip stitch. Tie off and cut yarn.

    • 14

For flap row one, attach yarn at the top single stitch section. Chain two and then work one single crochet in each single crochet. In the last single crochet stitch chain two and turn. Single crochet in each single crochet to the end of the section. Chain two and turn. For flap rows two to 20, chain two and single crochet in each single crochet to the end of the section. Chain two and turn. Tie off and cut yarn.

    • 15

Make four buttons as in Section 1. Stitch one to each side of the back opening of the cover and two at the bottom.

    • 16

If you want to add a strap, attach two strands of yarn at the side near where the camera's strap connector is. Chain as many chains as desired to make a comfortable length of strap. Turn and work single crochet stitches in each chain stitch. Chain two and turn. Single crochet in each single crochet. Chain two and turn. Continue with single crochet rows until strap is the desired width. At the end, attach end to other side of case near where the camera's connector is.
