How to Care for a Monofilament Cast Net

A monofilament casting net can last you many years if you invest the time and effort to keep it in good condition. Regular use, prolonged exposure to sun, as well as slime and water residue can harm the netting, making it brittle and weak. From the first day you own your net, you can inspect, condition, clean and store the net in ways that will prolong its life.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Check the monofilament cast net for any holes or tears. If you find any, cut a length of monofilament and tie the holes closed.

    • 2

Soak the cast net in a 5 gallon bucket filled with tap water and 1 cup of liquid fabric softener. Allow the net to soak 12 to 24 hours. This will soften the net and make it less stiff and easier to for you to use. Do this before using a brand new net for the first time and then every six to eight months afterward.

    • 3

Remove the net from the soaking solution and rinse it thoroughly with a water hose.

    • 4

Hang the net over a low object that won't snag the net. Don't allow the weights or leadline on the net to leave the ground. The net should be supported, but not stretched.

    • 5

Store the net in a cool, dry area where it won't become dirty or snag on other objects, once it's completely dry.
