How to Adjust Target Turrets

A target turret is an adjustment mechanism for sighting a rifle scope. These are adjusted to account for wind speed, direction and the elevation differences between the shooter and target. Proper calibration of a target turret scoping mechanism involves zeroing the rifle and tracking range, wind and elevation factors. Familiarity with a rifle's target turret range performance can help in aiming accuracy. Regular care and inspection of a target turret scope can help optimize the rifle's continued operation.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish a zero setting for the rifle. Aim the targeting reticle at the desired ranged target. A 200 yard-ranged target is typical. Adjust the target turret to zero and record the rotation setting with the corresponding wind and elevation readings. These are typically indicated below the rotating dials.

    • 2

Set up a target at the first distance to be targeted beyond the established zero target. Count the number of dial clicks for each range. Record the additional clicks beyond zero with their corresponding wind and elevation readings.

    • 3

Convert the target turret clicks to MOA (minute of angle) to use the older style of sighting. Divide the number of clicks by the click value of the MOA scope. A 1/8 MOA scope would divide the total number of clicks by eight. A 1/4 MOA scope would divide the total number of clicks by four.
