How to Install MonoKote

MonoKote is a line of lightweight plastic shrink wrap films used to cover the surfaces of model aircrafts. MonoKote films come in different color schemes such as transparent, metallic, opaque, neon, flats and pearl. Manufactured by Top Flite, each MonoKote has an adhesive on one side and leaves a tight, durable and paint-quality covering. Installing MonoKote requires applying heat to help the adhesion of the film to the surface to be covered. MonoKote can be installed on fiberglass, plywood, balsa and even foam.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread your MonoKote on a flat surface. Place the part of your model you want covered on the MonoKote.

    • 2

Cut the MonoKote section under the model with a razor blade. Allow 2 inches wider and 4 inches longer than the dimension of the model when cutting.

    • 3

Peel the MonoKote from its clear backing. Spread it over the model part and let it overlap by 1 inch on all sides. Allow 3-inch overlap for the wing tip.

    • 4

Set your heat sealing tool to 275 degrees Fahrenheit. Press down the MonoKote at the center end of the model part to tack it down. Pull the MonoKote until it is taut and tack it down along the sides too.

    • 5

Pull the Monokote tightly at the center of its free end and tack it down there. Pull the film diagonally across the wing and tack it down at the corners of its leading and trailing edges.

    • 6

Apply the heat sealing tool down the sides of the MonoKote, starting at the trailing edge, then leading edge and along the tip and center. Pull the MonoKote tightly while sealing it and leave 1 inch unsealed at the center to allow air to escape.

    • 7

Trim off all excess materials at the edges after allowing 1/4 inch overlap. Iron down the sharp edges with the sealing tool.

    • 8

Place the heating tool lightly on the surface of the MonoKote. Move it back and forth to shrink the MonoKote tighter. Iron the surface toward the air escape opening at the top. Seal the opening with the heating tool.
