Things You'll Need
Instructions
Remove any ammunition from your gun. Lay the gun flat on its side. Remove both screws from the grip panel. Some models require a screwdriver; others require an Allen wrench. One screw is typically located at the top of the panel, and one at the bottom. Flip over the 1911. Remove both screws from the grip panel on the opposite side.
Wrap a rubber band around the grip safety. This the metal piece at the top of the grip, located near the hammer. Ensure your gun's hammer is down, and not cocked. Lay the gun flat on its side, with the dimpled side of the mainspring-housing pin facing up.
Place a 2-inch wood block underneath the gun handle, propping the bottom of the handle 2 inches off your work surface. Ensure that the bottom of the handle, where the clip is inserted, hangs over the edge of the wood block by 1 inch.
Press down on the gun firmly. Push out the mainspring-housing pin on the bottom outside corner of the handle using a 3/16-inch punch. Hammer with a rubber mallet until the pin comes out on the other side.
Remove the punch from the hole. Slide the mainspring down and off the back of the handle.
