How to Take the Buttstock Off the M4 Collapsible Stock

The M4 carbine is not just a single weapon, but rather the basis for a family of firearms, all based on the same stock model. The civilian variant of these rifles is the AR-15, a semi-automatic rifle that can utilize most of the add-ons available to the M4 family. The collapsible stock is one such accessory that allows you to adjust the rifle stock to fit your own purposes, rather than have to make do with a non-adjustable stock. It is not strictly necessary to remove the buttplate from the stock when removing or working on the collapsible stock, but it will make your work easier if you do so.

     Locate the adjustment lever on the bottom of the buttstock -- this lever allows you to adjust the stock to fit your frame.

     Lift up on the lever rather than press down. This will disengage the slide lock completely.

     Pull the buttplate backwards and off the stock tube.
