How to Refill an SCBA

A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is a device worn by scuba divers, rescue workers and firemen that provides breathable air in environments where air is not readily available. Refilling SCBA tanks, while relatively easy, does require a great deal of upfront investment of time to obtain certifications and money to purchase equipment. Therefore, unless the frequency of your tank fills outweighs the investment, it is best to seek a professional to perform the fill. Otherwise, follow these steps to fill your SCBA tank.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Check the hydrostatic testing date on the cylinder. If the date is outside of the tank's expirty then the cylinder is out of compliance and should not be filled.

    • 2

Release air from the cylinder until approximately 10 psi remains.

    • 3

Perform an inspection of the tank by confirming there is no water or objects inside the tank by shaking it and listening for noises. Confirm the valves on the top of the tank are free of damage and rust.

    • 4

Perform an inspection of the compressor system and its fittings, including the gauges and filters to confirm they are in working condition.

    • 5

Insert the tank into a cold water bath connected to the compressor. Wipe the valves and the compressor connection clean.

    • 6

Connect the compressor connection to cylinder.

    • 7

Open the cylinder valve completely and start the compressor to fill the cylinder.

    • 8

Monitor the tank level during filling. Depending on the type of compressor, it may automatically shut off when it reaches the appropriate level. If you have a manual compressor, shut the valve off when the volume reaches the given fill volume for the tank.

    • 9

Disconnect the tank and confirm the valves are completely closed. Remove the tank from the cool-water bath and shut off the compressor.
