How to Create An Altered Environment Using a Pinhole Camera & Site-Specific Art

A pinhole camera, also called a "camera obscura," projects an image of whatever it's aimed at on the other side of the hole. To alter the image of a site-specific piece of art, place the pinhole camera close to the art. The image-taking properties of the pinhole camera will warp the look of the art to create a wide-angle environment.

Things You'll Need

  • Black-and-white photographic paper, 8-by-10-inches
  • Duct tape
  • Towel
  • Photography store or lab

Instructions

    • 1

Place the pinhole camera that you made from a coffee can on the bathroom counter. Remove the lid. Place the box of black-and-white photographic paper on the counter, next to the can,

    • 2

Place a piece of duct tape over the hole in the side of the can. Close the bathroom door. Place a towel against the bottom of the door.

    • 3

Turn off the bathroom light. Open the photographic paper box and remove a sheet of photographic paper. Curl the paper inside the can, with the shiny side facing out. Place the lid on the can. Close the box of photographic paper before you turn on the light.

    • 4

Place your pinhole camera on the ground, opposite the site-specific art that you are going to photograph. Rotate the can so the tape on its side faces the art. Press down on the can from the top with one hand as you pull off the tape.

    • 5

Leave the pinhole camera undisturbed for three hours. Replace the tape over the hole.

    • 6

Return to the bathroom, close the door and place the towel against the bottom edge. Turn off the light. Open the box of photographic paper. Remove the lid from the can.

    • 7

Remove the photographic paper from inside the can. Place the paper, face down, inside the box. Close the box. Turn the light on.

    • 8

Take the photographic box to a photography store or to a photo lab. Inform them to develop the first sheet of paper in the box, using their normal black-and-white photo processing. The picture you will pick up will be a distorted, wide-angle view of the site-specific art that will look different that what is normally seen by the eye.
