How to Troubleshoot an Icom IC-R2

Icom's IC-R2 communications receiver operates on frequencies between 0.495 MHz and 1309.995 MHz. Accessories with the device include an antenna, hand strap, belt clip, two Ni-Cd batteries and a charger. Any radio may receive its own oscillated frequency that manifests itself as noisy reception on some frequencies, which is normal. Other issues with the radio can include the abnormal noise, the frequency not being able to be set and distorted audio.

Verify that the antenna is firmly connected if you have problems transmitting or receiving. The antenna screws in. Also check that the batteries are fully charged. You can use new, regular AA batteries in lieu of the Ni-Cads. Successful transmissions using regular batteries can help determine whether the Ni-Cads have reached the end of their life. Try the transmission again.

Press "Func" and "Mode/Lock" to cancel the lock function if frequencies can't be set. Then turn the channel indication mode to "Off" while you're setting the frequency. The channel indication mode displays pre-programmed memory channel numbers only. Turn it off by selecting "Memory Mode" with "V/M." Then press "V/M" for two seconds to enter the expanded set mode. Rotate the dial until "Ch" shows; then, while pressing "Func," turn the dial to the "Channel Indication Off" position. Try setting the frequencies again.

Check the tone using "Tone Scan" if no sound is coming from the speaker. A different tone is likely selected with tone squelch. Select the frequency or memory channel and press "Func," then the "Up" or "Down" button for two seconds to start tone scan. The tone frequency will be decoded and the set mode contents will be programmed with the tone frequency. "Ct" appears during the scan. Push "Func," then the "Up" or "Down" buttons again to stop the scan.
