How to Single-String Braid

Braiding is done by taking three strands and intertwining them together. Many people think that in order to braid, you must start out with three separate strands. This is untrue, however. It is entirely possible to form a braid by using a single strand, as is demonstrated in the single-string braid knot. Because you're braiding a single strand of string, this knot is often used to strengthen the rope attached to it by making it three times as strong as it was untied.

Instructions

    • 1

Loop the string into a circle. This will give you three strands to work with.

    • 2

Begin braiding the string the same way you would braid hair. This can be done by bringing the string on the left over the middle string. This will cause the middle string to now be on the left. Take the string on the right and bring it over the new middle string. Repeat this step, alternating left and right sections going over the middle.

    • 3

Continue braiding the string until you reach the end of the rope. End the braid by pulling the leftover string through the outside loop of the braid.
