How to Measure Ohms With Multimeter

A multimeter is a handy, pocket-sized electronic device that measures different kinds of electrical properties, such as voltage in volts, current in amps and resistance in ohms. Resistance limits the current in a circuit; according to Ohm's Law, the higher the resistance, the lower the current. While the circuit needs some current to function, the right current combinations make complex circuits work properly. Measuring ohms of resistance helps find problems in circuits.

Instructions

    • 1

Disconnect all power from the component for which you want to measure resistance.

    • 2

Turn the multimeter on and rotate its function knob so it points to the resistance function.

    • 3

Touch the tip of the meter's red probe to one of the component's leads. Touch the tip of the black probe to the other lead. Hold the probes by the plastic body and do not touch the metal tip. The resistance of your skin will cause an inaccurate reading.

    • 4

Read the resistance on the meter's display. Allow up to 10 seconds for the reading to settle down to a stable value.
