New York Revolutionary War Volunteer Re-Enactment Groups

Historical re-enactments are an activity in which participants attempt to accurately perform or portray an actual historical occurrence, especially famous wars and battles. In the U.S. one of the oft re-enacted events is the American Revolutionary War. New York, a state and original colony affiliated with the history of the period, is home to a number of Revolutionary War re-enactment groups.
  1. The 3rd New York Regiment, Long Island Companies

    • The Third New York Regiment is a nonprofit group that relives the experiences of the Long Island soldier and his family during the American Revolution. They wish to depict the history of their subject with accuracy through precise detail in order to preserve their forefather's legacy. This organization is open to men, women and children to participate. They not only re-enact battle scenes but focus on leatherwork, woodcarving, sewing, tinsmithing, and playing period music. All members of the family are encouraged to participate. They wish to educate the general public on the sacrifices Long Island families made for the war effort.

    The First Ulster County Militia

    • This re-enactment group was reorganized in 1996 by Ben Carlos, who served as its president until 2007. Their ambition is to inform the public about Ulster County, New York's colonial and Revolutionary War heritage, to promote local historical sites and to maintain historical accuracy. They host the biennial reenactment of the burning of Kingston, N.Y. by British troops. They created a replica of an 18th-century war vessel. Additionally, they re-enact battles from the French and Indian War. They have meetings on the fourth Monday of every month.

The 2nd Regiment of the Albany County Militia

    • This is a group based in the Albany metropolitan area. They are the largest re-enactment group in the area. They claim to be "a record of and a recreation of the struggles, trials and bravery of the people of Schenectady and the surrounding valleys during their fight for freedom from Great Britain." Formed in 1999, their members come from all over the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions. For several years they have traveled around to the middle schools of the Capitol City area, performing re-enactments and demonstrations. They use 100 percent natural fibers in all their period garments and seek to portray characters, both men and women, from all walks of life of the era.

    The 5th New York Regiment

    • The 5th New York Regiment was formed in 2001 and currently claims 80 dues-paying members. They belong to the Brigade of the American Revolution, an interstate nonprofit Revolutionary War re-enactment group. They are based out of the Fort Montgomery Battle Site in Fort Montgomery, N.Y.
