How to Dispose of Grey Water

Grey water is water that has been used for cooking or washing, and thus, contains soap residue and other debris. Disposing of grey water safely is a concern when you are camping or using a water collection and recycling system at home. Unlike other water, grey water shouldn't be simply dumped back into the ground. Not only can grey water leave dangerous puddles of standing water, but it may contain chemicals from the soap and residue that can leach into the surrounding groundwater. The easiest and least expensive way to dispose of grey water is to let it evaporate from a shallow tank.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread the tarp over the area where you will place your evaporating tank. Choose an area of your yard that is flat and will not be disturbed by animals or children.

    • 2

Secure the tarp, placing large rocks or bricks around its perimeter.

    • 3

Place the wading pool in the center of the tarp.

    • 4

Drape the black plastic sheet over the wading pool. Center it over the pool and allow slack in the center. It should sag down in the center of the pool.

    • 5

Secure the sheet to the wading pool by clamping it to the edges of the pool with large clamps.

    • 6

Pump or pour grey water into the center of the plastic, and allow it to stand and evaporate. This can take several days to several weeks, depending on your climate, humidity and the amount of grey water.

    • 7

Remove the black plastic between grey water cycles, and clean off scum with an old rag. Then re-clamp in place to reuse.
