How to Measure Meters in Sniping

Knowing how to estimate the distance to your target when sniping is a vital skill. It allows you to compensate for factors such as bullet drop, wind resistance and leading. Fortunately, most modern scopes designed for sniper rifles are fitted with tick marks to aid you in determining the distance. If you have a good idea of how tall your target is in meters, you can estimate the distance to it by determining the height it takes up in terms of tick marks when viewing it in your scope.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a visual estimate of the height of your target in meters. As an example, an adult human male ranges approximately from 1.67 to 1.9 meters, and a vehicle tire is approximately 0.38 meters.

    • 2

Determine the height of the target in your scope in terms of the tick marks on the vertical axis of your cross-hairs.

    • 3

Divide 1,000 by the height in tick marks determined in Step 2.

    • 4

Multiply the estimated height of your target determined in Step 1 by your result from Step 3 to calculate the approximate distance to the target in meters.
