How to Separate Gold From Sandstone

Panning for gold is a hobby that can reap potentially high rewards. If you know the right areas to go and how to complete the panning process, you could end up with some valuable gold nuggets in the bottom of your pan. The panning process basically involves scooping up rocks, dirt and sediment from the ground beneath the water and then using a specific technique to separate the gold from other materials like sandstone.

Instructions

    • 1

Add a generous amount of material from the ground beneath the water to your gold pan.

    • 2

Find an area of the water that has gentle movement and that's deep enough for you to submerge your pan.

    • 3

Put the pan just underneath the water and shake it back and forth. The sandstone and other material will start to rise to the top and be taken away by the stream.

    • 4

Break up any larger clumps of material that you see during the panning process. These clumps could contain gold or sandstone, and you won't know until the contents are broken down and released.

    • 5

Continue shaking the pan just beneath the water's surface to separate the gold from the sandstone and other material.
