Archivists, scrapbookers and other crafts enthusiasts avoid paper with high lignin content because it darkens the paper as it ages and decomposes. Lignin is an organic compound found in the cellular walls of plants. It is what gives plant cells the stiffness and structure that allows them to stand. Learn how to test paper products for lignin before you use them for a project that you want to hold up over the years.
