How to Relacquer a Brass Horn

Brass horns are most often covered in lacquer, providing the surface with a protective finish. Over time, brass will lose this initial sheen, becoming dull and more prone to scratches and imperfections. This can be a disappointment to anyone who admired the initial quality of the horn, but it does not have to be permanent. You can relacquer a brass horn in just a few steps.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the horn thoroughly. Using a cotton cloth, wipe the entire surface in a circular motion, until all dust and surface dirt have been removed.

    • 2

Leave the horn indoors for ½ hour, allowing it to adjust to room temperature. When lacquer is applied to brass that is room temperature, it will set evenly.

    • 3

Place the horn on a piece of newspaper.

    • 4

Spray the horn with a coat of brass lacquer spray. Hold the horn in the air for 15 seconds.

    • 5

Apply one more coat of lacquer spray to the horn.

    • 6

Continue to hold the horn up for 15 seconds, and apply coats of lacquer spray until the horn is suitability covered. Brass with more surface imperfections may require up to five coats, while brass with few imperfections may require just two.

    • 7

Set the horn down to dry. This will take about ½ hour.
