How to Use a Pocket Compass

Compasses have helped people navigate across land and sea for hundreds of years. The magnetized needle of a compass is sensitive to the earth's magnetic field and aligns itself with the north and south poles. Provided they have bearings to follow, navigators can use the north-pointing needle to plot a course anywhere in the world.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the map on a table or other flat surface with the compass on top of it. Turn the compass until the needle lines up with the northern cardinal point. This will be marked by the letter N.

    • 2

Turn the map so that the top of it faces north and the bottom of it faces south. Virtually all maps are created so that north is at the top.

    • 3

Find your location on the map and choose a destination point that is not too far away. It is easiest to choose a destination that lies on one of the cardinal points, for example one that is either directly above (north), below (south), left (west) or right (east) of the start point.

    • 4

Hold the compass flat in the palm of the hand and wait for the needle to settle. Turn your body until the needle is pointing at the required cardinal point. Walk forward, keeping the needle pointing at the destination.

    • 5

Improve compass reading by choosing destinations at inter-cardinal points such as North-East, South-East, South-West and North-West, or even at secondary inter-cardinal points that are halfway between each cardinal point and inter-cardinal point. Most destinations will require multiple readings to take account of obstacles and available walking areas.
