How to Winterize Boat Seats

When the temperature drops, it's time to put your boat away for the winter. Most of a boat's winterizing needs involve the engine and electronics. But other parts of your boat need winter care too. If you want your boat seats to last as long as your boat does, winterize them along with the rest of the boat. While they are unlikely to freeze, they can crack, mildew and degrade over the long winter months if not properly cared for.

Wash dirt and debris off the seats and cushions. Follow your boat manufacturer's recommendations for the appropriate cleaning solutions. If the owner's manual doesn't specify, use a sponge and soapy water (1 tsp. liquid detergent per quart of water). Rinse them well with a sponge and clean water, then towel them dry.

Coat the seat cushions with a protectant that does not contain alcohol. Follow any product recommendations your boat owner's manual makes. If the owner's manual doesn't specify, you can find vinyl protectants at most automotive or big-box retailers. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for application methods and amounts.

Store the cushions in the boat on their narrowest edge, leaned against the side of the boat to allow air to circulate freely around them during storage. If your boat does not have a secure, weatherproof cover, remove the cushions from the boat and store them in a climate-controlled area indoors.
