How to Make a Lasso Out of String

Traditional lariats used to capture cattle are made from rope, but a string lariat makes a size-appropriate prop for dolls or clay figures. To tie a proper lasso, all you need to know is how to tie a Honda knot. Honda knots work best with soft string held straight out in front during the tying process.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the string to the desired length.

    • 2

Tie a simple overhand or "pretzel" style knot in one free end of the rope and leave it loose. To tie this knot, cross the free end of the string under itself to make a loop, then pass the free end through this loop. Notice that one side of the knot is crossed.

    • 3

Weave the free end of the rope under the top piece of rope where the knot is crossed. Pull the free end over the end of the knot that lies opposite the crossed end. This will make a lasso loop.

    • 4

Feed rope up from the long end of the rope until the lasso loop is as long as you like.

    • 5

Pull the bottom end of the rope tight to secure the knot.
