How to Do the Magic Trick Called the Magic Stick

The Magic Stick is a close-up illusion that uses a stick with six colored bars on it. The trick makes it appear as if the stick transforms into a solid color. The magician turns the colored stick over to show the six colors on both sides. An audience member picks a number between one and six, and the magician uses that number to count up to the color, which is the "magic color." The magician rubs the color, covers the stick, and when he reveals the stick, it turns to the magic color.

Instructions

  1. Make Your Magic Stick

    • 1

Glue two ice pop sticks together to make one thick stick. Hold the sticks together with two medium binder clips until the glue dries.

    • 2

Use a color printer to print a block of solid orange large enough to cover the stick. Glue the print out to one side of the stick. Trim the paper around the stick to make the paper flush with the stick's edge.

    • 3

Use the printer to print a block of six color bars (blue, green, orange, white, yellow and red) large enough to cover the stick. Glue this multicolored print out to the other side of the stick. Trim the paper around the stick to make the paper flush with the stick's edge.

    • 4

Allow the glue to dry thoroughly.

    Performing the Trick

    • 5

Hold the stick with the multicolored side facing your audience, pointing out the different colors.

    • 6

Turn the stick over end-to-end, while flipping it horizontally with your fingers. Do this quickly, and it will appear that the bottom side also has multiple colors. However, because you flipped the stick while you were turning it, you are really only showing the same side. Repeat this several times to convince the audience both sides of the stick are multicolored.

    • 7

Have an audience member choose a number between one and six. Count the colors from the tip of the stick to the middle, forcing the chosen color to be orange. If the audience member picks one, spell out the number as you count: "o-n-e," landing on the third color, which is orange. If the number is two or six, also spell it out: "t-w-o" or "s-i-x." If the number is three, count up: "one, two, three." If the number is four, count up from the other side: "one, two, three, four." If the number is five, spell it out from the other side: "f-i-v-e."

    • 8

Rub the orange bar on the stick. Then cover the stick with your hand. While the stick is under your hand, flip it horizontally so the orange side is up. Pull your hand back to reveal the orange stick.

    • 9

Turn the stick over to reveal that one side is orange and the other side is multicolored.

    • 10

Rub the solid orange side. Then turn the stick and flip it horizontally at the same time to make it appear as if both sides are now orange.

    • 11

Tap the stick, then cover it with your hand. Under your hand, flip the stick horizontally to reveal the multicolored side. Remove your hand to show the multicolored side, and turn it over to reveal one side is still orange.

    • 12

Tap the stick again, then turn it over while flipping it to make it appear that both sides appear multicolored.
