How to Size a Recurve

Archery enthusiasts face numerous questions when purchasing their first bow. Bows can cost anywhere from a couple hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars, depending on the quality of the bow and the materials it is constructed of. Additionally, accessories such as arrows add to the overall price. Two factors impact the strength of a bow. These are the draw length and the draw weight. The draw length varies by user and dictates the proper length of a recurve bow for that user.

Stand straight up. Hold the bow in the left hand in the grip area. Raise the bow to shoulder length. Ask an assistant to place the tape measure parallel to the ground so that it starts at the area of the bow string that is pulled.

Slowly and confidently use the right hand to pull the bow string back. Ask your assistant to measure the length that the string is pulled. This is the draw length.

Use a conversion chart to convert the draw length to a recurve size. For example, a draw length of 27 to 29 inches yields a recurve bow that is 64 to 66 inches long.
