In the Wild
Cockatiels are native to Australia and inhabit open woodlands, savannas and dry regions. They travel in large flocks and can fly long distances in search of food and water. They are ground foragers and eat a variety of fruit, nuts, insects and seeds. Cockatiels are typically nocturnal birds that breed in hollow limbs or holes in trees. They breed from August to December. They are known to eat crops and are considered a pest to many farmers.
Pet Basics
Cockatiels live up to 30 years and are a long-term pet. They require a cage that is big enough to allow them to spread their wings. Cleaning the cage is important to reduce chances of sickness. These birds can grow to 14 inches long with an equivalent wingspan and should have cages with twice as much room. Cockatiels eat vegetables, fruits, pellets and vitamin enriched seeds.
Grooming
If you plan to own a cockatiel, it's important to know that they require some maintenance. Cockatiels should have their feathers trimmed every few weeks to keep them from flying out of their cage upon opening. They also should have their nails clipped on the same schedule because the nails can grow long and get caught in the cage. Both tasks may require at least two people, and it may be wise to learn these procedures from a veterinarian or bird breeder first. You can buy cuttlebone that will allow the cockatiel to trim its own beak.
Song
Though they don't have the best voice in the parrot family, cockatiels are sociable birds that love to be heard in a variety of soft melodic tones and squawks. They are known to mimic human voices and different mechanical or electrical equipment in the house like microwaves and phones. They can even sing songs like "Happy Birthday" and other melodies heard in their living area.
