How to Dye With Kool Aid

When people think of Kool-Aid, they usually think of it as a drink but Kool-Aid has another use. Dyeing with Kool-Aid is done in crafts and other projects to color items without the use of toxic or harmful materials. It is a product that is safe for even children to use. Kool-Aid is inexpensive, comes in many colors to experiment with, and no special equipment is necessary.

Things You'll Need

  • Yarn
  • Bowl
  • Kool-Aid
  • 6 oz water
  • 2 oz vinegar
  • Plastic wrap
  • Glass dish
  • Microwave
  • Boiled eggs
  • Small containers
  • Slotted spoon
  • Old towel

Instructions

  1. Dyeing Yarn With Kool-Aid

      Soak the yarn in a bowl of hot water for 30 minutes.

      Mix 6 oz water, 2 oz vinegar and Kool-Aid in another bowl.

      Take the yarn out of the hot water and squeeze out as much water as possible.

      Lay a long sheet of plastic wrap out on a flat surface and place the yarn on it.

      Pour the dye over the yarn, enfold in the plastic wrap and move dye around inside to cover all of the yarn.

      Place the wrapped yarn into a microwave-safe dish and microwave for two minutes.

      Rinse the fiber well with warm water until it runs clear. Hang the yarn to air dry.

    Dyeing Eggs With Kool-Aid

      Fill each container with 2/3 cup of water and mix in a packet of Kool-Aid. Stir until the Kool-Aid dissolves.

      Place an egg in each container and let them sit for two minutes.

      Remove the eggs with your slotted spoon and place on an old towel to dry.

      Experiment by dipping eggs in one color, and then another to see what color mixes you can create.
